This course helps to learn

  • - This course helps to learn
  • - ICT skills and
  • - Computational skills.

Computer Science itself aids the every other subject in one form or another.

You gain a wide range of skills when studying computer science. Technical skills such as programming, and non-technical skills such as problem-solving and leadership, are amongst some of them. We live in a time where technology plays an important role in many aspects of life, and so the many skills provided with this degree are in high demand.

In computer science, your study will involve core subjects, such as the basic programming, databases, data structures and the principles of computer hardware – plus more.

Having a good grasp in mathematics will also prove to be beneficial for students taking computer science as one of their subjects.

Notice:

Computer Science Lab Rules:

  • 1. Food and drinks are not allowed in the lab. Chewing gum, eating, drinking, smoking, littering are prohibited inside the computer laboratory.
  • 2. Be prepared to show your College ID card if requested. You can be asked to leave the lab if you cannot provide this ID.
  • 3. No one is allowed to alter or delete configuration settings of any computer laboratory equipment. Tampering, deleting or modifying CMOS/BIOS settings, IP Configuration, system parameters, or system files stored in the hard disk are strictly prohibited.
  • 4. Chairs should always be pushed back in close to the desks.
  • 5. Ensure that no trash is left behind.
  • 6. Turn-off computer units and arrange the computer peripherals (mouse, keyboard and headset) after use.
  • 7. Treat the equipment as if it were your own; be nice to it.
  • 8. Use your common sense.

FAQs:

  • Q:1     Are there any tutorials for installation and use of Canvas Student Mobile Application?
    Ans:   Yes.
Installation and using Canvas Student Mobile Application from Google Play Store for viewing course material and submission of assignments:

Click here to view/download the tutorial.

Using Canvas directly on web browser to view course material and submit assignments:

Click here to view/download the tutorial.

  • Q:2     I am registered in the course but I am not able to install Student Mobile Application because I think my mobile phone is not supporting the app.
Ans:   If app is not supportable on Mobile Phone, then you may also open the courses on canvas in your phone’s web browser.
Go to Course Page (say COMP101TH) in the Department of Computer Science Home Page(http://www.gcbhoranj.info/computer_application_dept.aspx), then click on Link to Course Material or Type https://canvas.instructure.com/ and login with your credential in your phone’s web browser.
  • Q:3     I have approach to a laptop or PC, can I watch the lecture videos on the laptop or PC?
Ans:   Yes, Go to https://canvas.instructure.com/ or open the course link on Department of Computer Science Home Page and login with your credentials.
  • Q:4     How should I make notes from lecture videos (if course is via online mode)?
Ans:   In general, it’s as per your convenience.
But, here are few suggestions while making notes:
    • First read the lecture’s pdf to get a rough idea about the lecture you are going to watch.
    • While watching the lecture, keep a notebook and side by side solve the examples yourself too.
    • Now, again read the pdf to clearly understand what the lecture was about and also, the points you have noted down while watching the lecture, then make the final notes.
    • Note: Don’t just copy and paste or write whatever is written in the pdf. i.e. understand the concept and write only what’s important.
  • Q:5     Should I share my assignments with others?
    Ans:   It’s strictly a “NO”.
Main motive of assignments is that you have clearly understood the concepts of the lecture and that’s the purpose of education. It’s not about cramming or just submitting the assignments because it’s a tradition that a student has to submit the assignment to get marks for internal assessment. It’s not a mere formality for internal assessment, it’s through assignments you will know what you understood and where you want more clarity in the concepts.
So, by sharing the assignments don’t spoil the future of your peers.
  • Q:6     How my assignments will be graded during the course?
Ans:   Whether course is via online mode or offline mode (i.e. classes in the college), all your submissions will be maintained online.
During offline classes, you will have access to computer lab, so you may upload the assignments from there too.
Grading of assignments is as follows:
There will be two deadlines for submission of assignments:
    • Due Date Submission
    • Late Submission (7days after due date)
Although assignments will be open for 7 days after due date but submission after due date and before the next deadline of 7 days ends will get you 20% less of the assigned grade to you.
e.g. Assignment-1 was due on 5th September,2020 and then next deadline for submission will be after 7 days i.e. 12th September, 2020.
    Now, following are the scenarios:
    Assignment:1 (Total Marks =10)

    Due Date: 05.09.2020

    Late Submission Allowed: 12.09.2020

    Submitted onMarks ObtainedOverall Grade AssignedRemarks
    Student:A 05.09.2020 8 8
Student:B 11.09.2020 8 6.4 20% of 8 will be deducted due to submission after due date but before 7days deadline
Student:C 13.09.2020 8 0 0 because submission after both the deadlines have passed. Also, assignment will be closed after 12.09.2020.

    1. If you have submitted your assignment on or before 5th September, 2020, you were assigned say 8 marks out of 10 that means your overall grade will also be 8 out of 10.
    2. If you have submitted your assignment after 5th September, 2020 but before 12th September, 2020, and you obtained 8 marks out of 10; then your overall grade will be deducted 20% of 8 i.e. you will be accorded 6.4.
    3. In all other cases except above mentioned two, you will be graded 0 and assignment will be closed after the late submission allowed date.
  • Q:7     What if I have not submitted some of the assignments?
Ans:  Your overall score for the assignments shall be at-least 40%.
i.e. combined score of all the assignments submitted during the course must be at-least 40% of the total.
Further, Minimum Pass Percentage in IA shall be 40%.
Problem Solving Using Computer (COMP101TH)

"Computer technology is so built into our lives that it’s part of the surround of every artist."

--Steven Levy

Welcome to the course COMP-101Th (Problem Solving Using Computer). Through this course you will get insight about the basic fundamentals of computer and how computers are organized. You will learn what kind of techniques we may apply to solve the problems through computers.

In the next half of the course, we will learn about Python programming language. Python is an interpreted, high level and general purpose programming language designed by Guido van Rossum in 1991.

You can use Python for developing desktop GUI application, websites and web applications. Python is commonly used in artificial intelligence projects and machine learning projects.
